Nine more on-street parking spaces and 10-metres of loading zone are to be provided in Phillip Street, Parramatta, as a result of a decision to make changes to traffic lanes between Church Street and the Wilde Avenue-Smith Street intersection.
The traffic lanes are being updated because inbound and outbound bus routes serving the Parramatta bus-rail interchange now use Macquarie Street and George Street.
The extra parking spaces and the loading zone will be located on the westbound section of Phillip Street between Horwood Place and Erby Place.
Generally, there will be will two traffic lanes in Phillip Street – one westbound and one eastbound (see drawing).
The eastbound lane will be wider at the Church Street intersection to allow The Loop, Parramatta’s free bus service, to turn from Church Street southbound into Phillip Street.
Work on updating the traffic lanes is scheduled to be carried out from September 2 to 11, weather permitting.
Because of high traffic volumes in the area during daylight hours, the work will be carried out at night between 8.00 pm and 5.00 am from September 2 to11 2009.
The Phillip Street work will include:
- Removing the westbound red bus only lane on the approach to the Church Street intersection and replacing it with black asphalt.
- Relocating traffic lights and vehicle stop lines in:
- Phillip Street westbound at the Church Street intersection.
- Phillip Street eastbound at the Wilde Avenue/Smith Street intersection.
- Church Street southbound at the Phillip Street intersection.
- Line-marking traffic lanes and signposting.
Warning signs will be put in place to alert motorists to changed traffic conditions during the night work.
