As part of the Great Western Highway Upgrade program, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is widening the existing, generally two lane highway between Station Street, Woodford and Ferguson Avenue, Hazelbrook, to a four lane divided highway.
What’s happening now?
Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook to Station Street, Woodford
This is the final stage in the Woodford to Hazelbrook upgrade of the highway.
In January 2010, the RTA awarded the tender for construction work to Reed Constructions Australia.
During February 2010 Reed Constructions will commence site establishment to prepare for construction and earthworks for the project.
Funding
This $160 million project is jointly funded by the Federal and NSW Governments.
Project features
Features of the stage between Winbourne Road and Station Street include:
- Widening the highway to a four lane divided road, with a centre median and shoulders with a minimum width of two metres on both sides of the highway.
- An off road pedestrian/cycle path to connect other paths built in previous stages of the Woodford to Hazelbrook upgrade.
- A new pedestrian bridge between Winbourne Road and Burford Street to better connect the railway station and Hazelbrook shopping centre.
- Protected centre bays for turning vehicles at Clearview Parade, Park Road and Woodford Avenue.
- Removal of the ramps connecting the Hazelbrook Rail Station overbridge.
- A full stormwater system, including water detention basins.
- Full size bus stop bays.
- Landscaping for the full length of the project.

- Improved pedestrian safety with a new pedestrian bridge over the highway at Hazelbrook railway station and a new path along the full length of the project.
- Improved pedestrian access between Hazelbrook Shopping Village and Hazelbrook railway station via a new pedestrian bridge over the highway.
- Improved road safety on the highway by constructing a centre median, or crash barrier, plus right turn lanes and realignment of intersections at Clearview Parade and Woodford Avenue.
- Improved appearance with urban design features and landscaping to improve the appearance of the highway corridor.

Ferguson Avenue to Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook
The contract for construction work between Ferguson Avenue and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook was awarded to Sydney Road Services (SRS). Work commenced on site in January 2008 and was completed in September 2009. The NSW Minister for Roads, Michael Daley and the State Member for the Blue Mountains, Phil Koperberg officially opened this section of the upgrade of the Great Western Highway on 13 September 2009.
What’s happened so far?
- The upgrade of the Great Western Highway between Ferguson Avenue and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook has been completed.
- The railway underpass opposite Oaklands Road, and the adjoining retaining walls have been constructed and the underpass is open to traffic and pedestrians.
- The ‘missing link’ to connect Clearview Parade and Beechmount Avenue in Hazelbrook Parade has been completed.
- Clearview Parade has been realigned and widened.
- Interim right turn provisions have been made to improve safety at the intersection of Clearview Parade and the highway.
- The skywalk across Gloria Park has been constructed and is open to pedestrian and cyclists.
- A telecommunications fibre optic main, railway signal cables and railway power lines that will be affected by the upgrade works have all been relocated.
