Upgrade of the Kings Highway between Queanbeyan and the ACT border

The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is delivering a series of improvements on the Kings Highway between Queanbeyan and the ACT border (in association with the Department of Defence).  This includes intersection upgrades at Weetalabah Drive, The Ridgeway and Captains Flat Road, as well as the realignment of a section of the Kings Highway between Thurralilly Street and Regent Drive.

A review of environmental factors for the proposed deviation was displayed for public comment from Monday 21 September 2009 until Monday 26 October 2009.

The estimated cost of the series of improvements on the Kings Highway is $26 million, with $16.3 million committed by the Australian Government and the remaining funding committed by the NSW Government.

Background

The Australian Government has constructed a new defence facility approximately 10 kilometres east of Queanbeyan. The site commenced operating in late 2008 before becoming fully operational in early 2009. While the facility is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the majority of its workforce are on site during normal business hours.

As this facility is located well away from urban areas and public transport, there has been a significant increase in traffic on the Kings Highway between the facility and Queanbeyan.

Project overview

The upgrade includes a package of traffic and safety improvements east of Queanbeyan and includes:

  • Upgrading the intersections at The Ridgeway, Captains Flat Road and Weetalabah Drive.
  • Realigning the Kings Highway between Thuralilly Street and Regent Drive, Queanbeyan.

Benefits of the proposal

  • Improved road safety.
  • Reduced queuing at intersections and more efficient access to the Kings Highway for motorists.
  • Reduced vehicle operating costs through improved traffic flow.
  • More opportunities for motorists to safely overtake slower travelling vehicles.
