Traffic flow improvement project

Background

The Spit/Military roads corridor is part of the main arterial route between the northern beaches residential areas of Sydney and the Sydney CBD. It is used by up to 78,000 vehicles daily, including extensive use by buses moving up to 60,000 passengers between the northern beaches, Mosman and the city.

The NSW Government has identified this corridor for the introduction of bus priority measures as a part of its long-term plan.

In May 2007 the NSW Government formed a working group to investigate initiatives to improve traffic flow in the Spit/Military roads corridor, between Balgowlah and Neutral Bay.

report (August 2008) recommended a number of initiatives, for consideration by the NSW Government. Please note this report has now been superseded. To view or download a copy of the updated information click here.

In August 2008 the NSW Government committed $48 million to improve traffic flow on Spit/Military roads.  To view or download a copy of the media release click here.

These initiatives are intended to benefit all road users along the corridor in this area, including bus commuters.  The initiatives are primarily targeted towards improving commuter peak travel times, however, buses will also benefit during the off-peak periods.

Consultation

The RTA has commenced consultation with local businesses and communities to help implement the initiatives. Following the first round of consultation with Mosman Municipal Council and North Sydney Council, the RTA agreed to further investigate a number of the proposed works, impacts of which concerned the councils. Some of these included:

  • Revisiting the need to extend the Clearway/T3 Transit Lane time restrictions from 7pm to 7:30pm on Spit/Military roads between Park Avenue and Ourimbah Road. This initiative has been reinvestigated with a decision taken to retain the current restrictions. For further details click here.
  • Reviewing the length of the Spit Road tidal flow scheme proposed during the morning peak.
  • Investigating alternatives to a right turn bay at Medusa Street.
  • Investigating if intersection improvements at Military/Spit Road would negate the need to remove parking between Cowles Road and Brady Street.
  • Identifying and consulting with impacted businesses and residents.

Progress

The first of the projects to improve traffic flow commenced in September 2009. Click on the map labels below to find updated information on each proposal.

Opening times

In October 2009, the RTA announced its proposal to reduce the number of weekday openings of the Spit Bridge to improve traffic flow for motorists. The RTA is inviting written comments on this proposal by Wednesday 4 November, and further information is available here.
