Action for Air, the NSW Government's 25-year Air Quality Management Plan

Action for Air, the NSW Government's 25-year Air Quality Management Plan, was released in 1998. The plan highlights the RTA’s role in reducing vehicle emissions through:

  • Advocating for new, tighter national fuel quality and emission standards for vehicles.
  • Reducing emissions from in-service vehicles.
  • Promoting alternative fuels.

Action for Air includes a Government commitment to a two-stage target to reduce car use in the Greater Metropolitan Region which encompasses Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. The targets are to achieve zero growth in per capita Vehicle Kilometres Travelled (VKT) by 2011 and zero growth in total VKT by the year 2021.

The RTA’s contribution to the travel target (total kilometres travelled by vehicles on the roads) includes:

  • Encouraging increased use of public transport by improving service quality and reliability through measures such as bus priority lanes.
  • Providing wider access to public transport by expanding the network into new areas and through the development of the western Sydney rapid bus-only Transitways.
  • Working with other agencies to meet the needs of our growing population by better integration of land use and transport planning
  • Reducing car dependency by encouraging teleworking, cycling and walking.
