Tunnel Ventilation Workshop

Road tunnel ventilation

The RTA is committed to researching and reporting on air pollutants along RTA roads. This commitment was demonstrated by RTA's participation in the International Workshop on Tunnel Ventilation, 7 - 9 June 2000, held in Sydney, Australia. This workshop was held to discuss the management of vehicle emissions from road tunnels.

Norway and Japan are the acknowledged world leaders in the construction and operation of road tunnels. Study tours have been undertaken in Norway and Japan, with a review of international developments in emission treatment systems in road tunnel applications also commissioned in 2004. Reports from those studies are available below.

Road tunnel ventilation in Japan

This report summarises the observations and conclusions of an RTA delegation that visited Japan from 30 September to 10 October 2003 to investigate current and emerging technology and practices relating to ventilation of road tunnels.

Road tunnel ventilation in Norway

The Road Tunnel Ventilation in Norway report was prepared at the conclusion of a visit by the Roads and Traffic Authority to Norway in September 2001. The visit, hosted by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, included inspection of road tunnels in Oslo, Laerdal, Trondheim and Drammen.
