Special number plates business offered for lease as part of mini-budget commitment

10-08-2009

The RTA’s special number plate business will be offered to the private sector in a move aimed at enhancing the business and directing ongoing revenues toward safer roads in NSW.

An RTA spokesperson said a concession, or private partnership, was being advertised from today (Monday).

“The commitment to partner with the private sector was delivered as part of the November 2008 mini-budget and comes after a steady growth in standard and personalised content number plate sales.

“Annual revenue has grown from $28 million in 2002 to $55 million in 2007-08 and $58 million in 2008-09,” the spokesperson said.

“The process of granting a concession for the special number plates business to the private sector is expected to take up to 12 months and this is the first step in the process.

“Standard yellow number plates will continue to be available from the RTA but special number plates, which are available in a wide range of styles and content options for cars, light trucks and motorcycles, will be offered as part of the partnership arrangement,” the spokesperson said.

Transferring the business to the private sector means taxpayers will not be exposed to the existing commercial risks and the government can focus its resources on core services and infrastructure.

The revenue will be shared between the government and the new business partner. The share going to the government will continue to pay for safer roads in NSW.
